What is Building Physics
The discipline of designing comfortable buildings that use minimal energy by applying physics and construction engineering.
What is a building envelope?
A physical seperator between indoors and outdoors such as a window, wall, door, ceiling or floor.
What is the difference between sensible and latent flows?
Sensible flows are the change in temperature, latent is the change in moisture.
What is thermal mass?
Thermal mass is the measure of a materials resistance to changing temperature and is dependant on the materials thermal capacity.
Name 4 sources of external loads.
Heat condution via the building envelope, solar radiation via windows, air loss through leaks, and fresh air intentionally introduced.
Name 5 internal loads
Hvac systems, water heaters, computers, appliances, people.
List the 5 energy analysis tools
HAP, TRACE, DOE-2, BLAST, EnergyPlus
Name 4 climate considerations when designing building envelopes
Temperature, Humidity, radiant heat, Air movement
What is the difference between wet and dry bulb?
Dry is measured only by temperature, wet utilises humidity
What is the Dew point?
The temperature at which water will condensate
List the 5 basic principles of air movement
velocity, direction, pressure, density, venturi effect
List 4 Environmental thermal comfort factors
Air temperature, relative humidity, radiant temperature, air velocity
List 2 personal thermal comfort factors
metabolic rate and clothing levels.
Name the two primary components of solar radiation
Direct beam radiation and diffuse radiation
Name the 2 things the intensity of solar radiation is dependent upon
Cloud cover and angle of the surface to the sun
Name the 3 things that determine insolation
Amount of energy absorbed, amount of energy transmitted, and amount of energy reflected
List 5 Passive design options for Daylighting
Daylight envelopes, massing and orientation, aperature design, redirecting light, glazing
Which orientation of a building provides the greatest ventilation
Short axis with greater length side perpendicular to the wind
Attributes of hard low emittance coating
Applied to glass ribbon using a baking process, less expensive, less effective
Attributes of soft low emittance coatings
applied in a vacuum, easily damaged, subject to oxidation degradation, more expensive, better thermal performance
Is an efficient HVAC system essential for a green building?
yes
What is the aim of WSUD
To improve the quality of water run off, lower the peak flow of water runoff
What is Grey water? What is Black water?
Greywater is water runoff that has not been contaminated by human products, black water is water contaminated with food or human waste
what are the uses of treated greywater?
Cleaning, Cooling, Toilets, Irrigation
What are the uses of treated black water?
irrigation
What is BIM?
Building information modelling; a digital representation of a physical characteristics of a structure
