Other Cell Functions A_M1
13 cards·by jennybakalov
protein synthesis
the cell's ability to produce proteins like albumin or globulin
moving materials across membranes
the cell's ability to move substances into our out of a cell
diffusion
the physical process where molecules of gases, liquids, and solids spread themselves
through a medium (i.e. fluid)
osmosis
the diffusion of water or any other solvent (fluid that dissolves other substances within it)
through a selective permeable membrane
filtration
the movement of solutes (solids that dissolve in liquids) and water across a semipermeable
membrane
active filtration
a process where molecules move across the cell membrane from an area of lower concentration to
an area of higher concentration
phagocytosis
the "cell eating" process that engulfs substances within particles
pinocytosis
this "this cell drinking" process surrounds large molecules and uses the substance as a
nutrient
cell specialization
cell sizes and shapes reflect the function of that distinct type of cell
abnormal cell growth
when a cell grows abnormally, resulting in tumors or neoplasms which are characterized as
benign or malignant
benign tumors
found in a localized area
malignant or cancerous growths
continue to grow
metastasis
when malignant growths spread to other areas of the body
