neurons
42 cards·by ilittle1
receptive regions that bear receptors for neurotransmitters released by the axon terminals
of other neurons (hair like projections)
dendrite
from which slender processes extend. This is the biosynthetic center of the neuron and part of
its receptive region
cell body (soma)
the architect of a cell containing genes, DNA, and the basic information to manufacture all
the proteins characteristics of the cell
nucleus
the organelle within the center which is involved actively in ribosome synthesis and in RNA to
the cytosol
Nucleolus
nerve fibers that form impulses generating and conducting the region of the neuron. the white
matter of the nervous system is made of this
axon
tightly wrapped around the axon in a jelly like fashion
schwann cell
the space of indentions in the sheath (the pinch )
myelin sheath gap
one very short process which divides into periphreal and central processes extending from
the cell body
unipolar neurons
has two processes attached to the cell body this type is only found as part of the receptor
apparatus of the eye, ear, and olfactory mucosa
bipolar neurons
all classified as dendrites except for a single axon. most neurons in the brain and spinal
cord.
multipolar
Divided into hemispheres, initiates movement, coordination of movement, temperature,
touch, etc
cerebrum
processing center of sensory information
diencephalon
Motor learning and balance equilibrium are main functions
diencephalon
Relays all information from body to cerebrum or cerebellum
brainstem
Develops from embryonic mesencephalic
mesencephalon
Develops from anterior parts of the neural tube forming telencephalon and diencephalon
prosencephalon
Develops Into metencephalon and the myelencephalon forming the brainstem
rombencephalon
Makes up the posterior portion of the brainstem
myelencephalon
Layers of the brain in order
dura, arachnoid, pia
Sensory nerve detecting smell
olfactory
Sensory nerve dealing with vision
optic
Motor nerve dealing with eye movement and pupillary constrictions
oculomotor
Motor nerve that moves the eye up and down
trochlear
Mixed nerve that helps with facial muscles of chewing
trigeminal
Motor nerve that moves eye laterally
abducens
Mixed nerve aiding in facial expressions and taste
facial
Sensory nerve aiding in hearing and equilibrium
vestibulocochlear
Sensory nerve dealing with posterior sensation of tongue and pharynx
glossopharyngeal
Mixed nerve dealing with swallowing, sensation if pharynx and larynx
vagus
Motor nerve of shoulder and neck muscles
accessory
Motor nerve dealing with tongue movement
hypoglossal
the most superior portion of the brain
cerebral hemispheres
shallow grooves that separate gyri
sulci
elevated ridges of tissue
gyri
deeper grooves in the brain
fissures
single deep fissure dividing hemispheres
longitudinal fissure
separates the cerebral hemispheres from the cerebellum below
transverse fissure
divides the frontal and parietal lobes
central suclus
divides temporal and parietal lobes
lateral sulcus
divides parietal and occipital lobes
parieto-occipital sulcus
the fifth lobe buried deep within the lateral sulcus
insula
lateral rectus
moves they eye laterally
