Newtons Laws of Motion and Energy

Study this deck
Forces
any action that can change or cause motion
Inertia
the property of an object that resists change of motion
Mass
the amount of matter in an object
Weight
the force of gravity pulling on mass
Mechanical Advantage
how much a machine helps
Potential Energy
energy of position due to gravity
Friction
a force that opposes moving objects and occurs any time objects touch
Kinetic Energy
energy of motion
Work
energy transferred by forces
Power
how fast you do work or transfer energy
Law of Conservation of Energy
energy is never created nor destroyed, just transformed into other forms of energy
Efficiency
tells you how much energy was retained in an energy transfer and how much was lost as friction
Newtons 1st Law
an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Newtons 2nd Law
the acceleration of an object is proportional to the force acting on it and inversely prop. to its mass
Newtons 3rd Law
equal and opposite forces whenever one object exerts a force on another object, the 2nd exert an equal and opp. force on the first
