touchpsychology
What are the basic four skin sensations?
pressure, warmth, cold, pain
kinesthesis
sense of the position and movement of our body parts
vestibular sense
monitors head's, and thus the body's, position and movement
What role does inner ear fluid play in the vestibular sense?
The semicircular canals and vestibular sacs contain fluid that moves as the head tilts and
stimulates hair receptors
nociceptors
sensory receptors that detect hurtful temperatures, pressures or chemicals
gate-control theory
the spinal cord contains a neurological "gate" that blocks pain signals or allows them to pass
on to the brain.
How does the "gate" in gate-control theory work?
It is opened by the activity of pain signals traveling up small nerve fibers and is closed by
activity in larger fibers or info. from brain
Memory of pain is...
edited. We tend to record pain's peak moment and how much pain we felt at the end of an event or
period
Taste sensations
sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami (savory meat taste)
sensory interaction
the principle that one sense may influence another, as when the smell of food influences its
taste
McGurk effect
seeing a speaker saying one syllable while hearing another, resulting in the perception of a
third syllable that blends both inputs
olfaction
experience of smell
