what are animalcules?
a microscopic animal or protozoan
what is structure?
something constructed, consisting of many parts
what is function?
what something is used for
what is a cell membrane?
a thin layer surrounding the entirety of a cell and its contents; think of it as a container
what is a cell wall?
same thing as a cell membrane, but thicker and tougher
what is a nucleus?
contains genetic information, controls cell processes
what is cytoplasm?
the gel that is inside the membrane, but outside the nucleus
what are prokaryotes?
simple cells with no nucleus, e.g. bacteria
what are eukaryotes?
cells which have a nucleus and multiple organelles; plants/animals are made of eukaryotes
what are organelles?
small organs inside the cell that make proteins, store nutrients, and contain enzymes
what is a nucleolus?
an organelle inside of the nucleus which assembles ribosomes
what is a nuclear envelope?
a double membrane around the nucleus
what is DNA?
deoxyribonucleic acid, AKA the building blocks of life
what is chromatin?
a grainy material in the nucleus made of DNA bound to protein; they turn into chromosomes when
the cell divides
what are chromosomes?
they carry genetic information
what is the cytoskeleton?
it is a protein network which maintains cell shape and helps a cell move
what are microtubules?
hollow tubes of protein which build cilia and flagella, and centrioles in cell division
what are ribosomes?
they make protein and are on the rough endoplasmic reticulum
what is the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)?
it is an organelles studded with ribosomes and is the site of protein assembly
what is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)?
it contains enzymes to assemble lipids
what is the golgi apparatus?
it is a stack of membranes which attaches carbohydrates lipids to proteins
what are lysosomes?
they break down food particles and recycle old organelles
what are vacuoles?
they store nutrients and help support plant leaves and flowers
what are chloroplasts?
they contain chlorophyll and convert sunlight to food through photosynthesis (only found in
plants)
what are mitochondria?
they use food energy to make compounds for growth, development, and movement (only found in
eukaryotes)
what is diffusion?
the movement of a substance from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower
concentration
what is a solute?
a substance being dissolved in a solvent
what is a solvent?
the substance dissolving the solute
what is concentration?
how much of a solute is in a given solvent
what is facilitated diffusion?
the process of proteins in the cell membrane allowing passage for molecules of correct size
what is active transport?
the energy-requiring process of moving solutes from areas of lower concentration to areas of
higher concentration
what is endocytosis?
facilitated diffusion in which the substance is diffused in as a vacuole
what is phagocytosis?
endocytosis, but for large particles
what is exocytosis?
endocytosis, but moving materials OUT of the cell
