sepal
A flower part that protects a developing flower bud until it is ready to open.
stamen
The male part of a flower; a thick stalk with a knoblike structure at the top.
anther
The knoblike structure at the top of a stamen; produces pollen.
pistil
The femal part of a flower; located in the center of the flower.
ovary
The bottom of a flower's pistil; contains one or more ovules.
ovule
The place where a plant's eggs are produced
style
A long, slender stalk that connects the ovary to the top of the pistil.
stigma
The sticky tip of the pistil; traps pollen grains.
cross-pollination
The transferring of pollen from the anther of one flower to the stigma of a flower on another
plant.
self-pollination
Pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same flower or to another flower on
the same plant.
fertilization
The process of a male sperm cell uniting with the female egg cell to form a zygote.
zygote
A fertilized egg.
embryo
The term used for a developing plant or animal after the zygote cell divides for the first time.
fruit
The part of a plant that contains the seeds.
germinate
To sprout.
cotyledon
The tiny seed leaves of the embryo; store food for seeds.
seed coat
The outer covering that protects the embryo and food. It also helps to keep the seed from drying
out.
