Most superficial muscle of posterior thorax; extends head; raises, rotates and retracts
scapula; fibers elevate and depress the shoulder
latissimus dorsi
broad, flat muscle of lower back, prime mover of arm extension, abducts and medially rotates
arm, depresses scapula
infraspinatus
a rotator cuff muscle partially covered by deltoid and trapezius that laterally rotates the
humerus, stabilizes shoulder
teres minor
inferior to infraspinatus, a rotator cuff muscle
teres major
located inferiorly to teres minor; extends, medially rotates, and abducts humerus
supraspinatus
obscured by trapezius; a rotator cuff muscle; assists abduction of humerus; stabilizes
shoulder joint
lavator scapulae
located at back and side of neck, elevates and abducts scapula
rhomboids (major and minor)
rotates glenoid cavity downward, stabilizes scapula, pulls scapula medially
