Guided Writing
An approach to writing instruction which is designed to address an area of need within students writing development
Selective Attention
Deciding in advance to attend to specific aspects of input, often by scanning for key words, concepts, and/or linguistic markers
Organizational planning
Planning the parts, sequence, main ideas or language functions to be expressed orally or in writing
Advance organization
Previewing the main ideas and concepts of the material to be learned, often by skimming the text for the organizing principle
Cooperative Learning
A process in which small groups of students collaborate and interact to accomplish a specific learning task or activity. Ex: think pairshare
Independent writing
uses: Word walls, Thematic word charts, Personal word books, dictionaries, "ask 3 then me"
Process writing stages
Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing
Shared Writing
When the students write with the teacher to help compose the txt as the teacher controls the pen
Invented Spelling
AKA: Temporary spelling, transitional spelling, developmental spelling
Minimal pairs
Words or phrases that differ by only one phoneme
Self-monitoring
Checking ones comprehension during listening or reading or checking the accuracy and/or appropriateness of ones oral or written production
Self-evaluation
Judging how well one has accomplished a learning activity after it has been completed
Self Talk
Reducing anxiety by using mental techniques that make one feel competent to do a learning task
Cooperation
Working together w/ peers to solve a problem, check a learning task, model a language activity or get feedback on oral or written performanc
Questions for clarification
Eliciting from a teacher to peer additional explanation, rephrasing, examples, verification
Inferencing
Using information in an oral or written text to guess meanings, predict outcomes, or complete missing parts
Transfer
using previous linguistic knowledge or skills to assist comprehension or production
Elaboration
Relating new info to prior knowledge, relating different parts of new info to each other
Auditory Representation
Playing back in one's mind the sound of a word, phrase, or longer language sequence
Imagery
Using visual images (either mental or actual) to understand and remember new information
Deduction/ Induction
Applying rules to understand or produce the second language or making up rules based on language analysis
Summarizing
Making a mental, oral, or written summary of information gained through listening or reading
Note taking
writing down key words and concepts in abbreviated, verbal, graphic, or numerical form during a listening or reading activity
Grouping
Classifying words, terminology, or concepts according to their attributes
Resourcing
Using target language reference material such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, or textbooks
Social/affective Strategies
Entail either interaction with another person, or exercising control over emotional or affective responses to learning
Cognitive strategies
Operate directly on incoming information manipulating it in ways to enhance learning
Metacognitive Strategies
Higher order thinking skills that may entail planning for, maintaining, or evaluating the success of a learning activity
