First Derivative Test
Determines if a function is increasing (+), decreasing (-), or at a critical point (0).
Second Derivative Test
Determines if a function is concave up (+), concave down (-), or at an inflection point (0).
Inflection Point
When the second derivative test = 0 the concavity of the graph changes.
Critical Point
Flat point on a graph which can be a local minimum, local maximum, or neither.
Local Minimum
Point where the y' is 0 and y' is negative to the left and positive to the right.
Local Maximum
Point where y' is 0 and y' is positive to the left and negative to the right.
Concave Up
A portion of a graph shaped like a right-side-up bowl.
Concave Down
A portion of a graph shaped like an upside-down bowl.
