what is the brain responsible for?
reasoning, memory, speech, sensation, sight, smell, hearing, body movement, breathing,
body temp......
neurons/ nerve cell consist of?
dendrites and axons
dendrites?
"fiber like" extensions from the cells (cell has MANY of them on the cell body)
Axons?
long "tail like" part of neuron cell (each cell has only ONE)
how do cells communicate with one another?
the axon of one cell makes an eletrical connection with the dendrite of another cell.
do neurons (brain or nerve cells) touch?
no
how do nuerons communicate with one another?
through eletrical impulses across gaps between cells called SYNAPSES.
how long does it take data to be lost from short term memory?
1 minuet
how is data linked?
by factors of emotion, location, output from other senses and intensity.
how is data recorded in the brain?
in the form of a series of brain connections; perhaps thousands of connections for a single
thought called a neural trace.
what does your brain do in the first 3 hours of sleep?
sorts through information and determines what is inportant to keep.
what does our brain do in the last 3 hours of sleep?
a sticky substance is secreted into synapses which hardens and secures neural traces
together. especially REM sleep
what do the cells do right after the first 3 hours of sleep?
the cell fires electrical imulses repeatedly across synapses.
what happens if you do not get the first and last hours of sleep needed?
loss of sleep will reduce the amount of information put into long term memory and will not be
avalible for recall.
why do teens need 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night?
to establish long term memory and they often may not have as much energy if they dont get the
required amount of sleep.
when are the 2 best times to study?
before bed and after breakfast.
is it bad to have to much stress but good to have a moderate amount of stress?
yes!!
is alot of stress a good thing?
no it can become a inhabitor of learning.
does it help to connect information to things you have already learnd and ti things in everyday
life?
yes it helps jog your memory.
does grouping information into smaller components help?
yes it increases the amount of data that stays in your memeory.
can you just skip breakfast?
NO! when you wake up your brain and body are deprived of glucose.
what is imprtant to have in a balanced breakfast?
protien, fat, starch, and sugar
what does group work help with?
problem solving.
why does cramming work but only termporarily?
it doesnt allow data to be transferd in to long term memory.
why do we need to create a foundation for information?
so we can use the information after the exam to and it will help if you have a career as a health
care professional.
what are some things to help us get orginized?
a planner, subject dividers, calenders, and to-do lists.
why is it important to not procrastinate?
it adds more stress and is we prcrastinate we can forget information.
how much sleep does the average teenager need?
6 to 8 hours.
