arguments that utilize fear and intimidation by exaggerating dangers. unprotected sex will
kill you
Either or choice
reduces a complicated issue to 2 possible choices. ex. pro life/pro choice. gun control
Slippery Slope
where the writer exzgerates the likely consequences of an action. ex. gay marriage leads to
penguin sex.
overly sentimental appeals
takes readers emotions excessively to distract readers from facts. ex. spca commercials
bandwagon
everyone's doing it you do it
appeals to false athority
writer uses himself as a claim and people as proof. ex. this is true because i studied the
subject
dogmatism
claim with very little support or without acknowledgement that counter position exists. ex.
religion dogmatism
ad hominem arguments
arguements that attack the character rather than the claim. ex. i'm not talking to that girl
because she is a hoe.
stacking the deck
when the rhetor only shows one side of the story. ex. the film suppersize me does not show eating
food an excising, just eating food
hasty generalization
an inference drawn from significant evidence.ex. because my honda broke down, all of them are
junk.
faulty casuality
assumption that if one event follows another, the first causes the second. ex. if a happens
then b happens, than a caused b.
begging the question
assuming as tue the very claim that's distributed is a circular argument that goes no where.
ex. can't give me a c for the course, a student
equiuation
half truths that give lies an honest appearance. ex. i wrote the entire paper myself
non sequitur
an argument's claims, reasons, or warrants don't connect logically
straw man
attack an arguement that isn't even there, either more powerful or weak.
red herring
changes the subject abruptly to throw readers off
faulty analogy
inaqurate or inconsequential comparisons between objects or concepts.
