1. What are the characteristics of Kingdom Protista?
Simple organisms, eukaryotic, most are single celled, some are multicellular, many are colonial, cells never organize into complex tissues
Where do protists live?
They live in wet/moist environments (to survive), water or marshy land areas. Some live in water, some in soil
3. Describe three ways that protists get their food.
Autotrophic/producers (hotosynthesis), heterotrophic (eat other things), or both
How are protists grouped/classified?
how they move or if they can move, protist producers, protist heterotophs that can move, protist heterotrops that cannot move
What are algae?
answer
Why is algae in a seperate group from plants?
dont have complex tissues (roots, stems, leaves)
Red algae?
most of worlds seaweed, ususally less than a meter long, chlorophyll and red pigments (allows them to live at deeper depths
Green algae?
most diverse group, chlorophyll is their main pigment, live in variety of places, can get very large (8m)
Brown algae?
most of seaweed found in cold climates, chlorophyll, largest species of algae (50m)
Diatoms?
single celled, encased in symmetrical silica, two part shell, live in salt and freshwater, make most of worlds phytoplankton
Dinoflagellates
single celled, have 2 flagella
Euglenoids
Single celled, can be heterotrophic and autotrophic
Amoebas
single celled blobs, create food vacuoles to take in food, some are paracites, use pseudopods to move
Shelled amoebas
same as amoebas, are protected by a shell
Zooflagellates
can be parasites and they look like worms, use flagella to move, and they live in other living things and feed off of them
Ciliates
have little feet called cilia, help them move and eat
What is a contractile vacuole?
Is a vacuole that pushes water out of the cell
Spore forming
often parasites, can have complicated life styles, sometimes live in two or more hosts (malaria)
water mold
mostly small, single celled organisms, found in water, and are either decomposers or parasites
smile mold
can move in some parts of its life cycle but mostly do not, live in moist cool places usually where there is a lot of wood, all decomposers,
