What is Texture?
A musical Characteristic that describes the relative roles and distributions of various melodies
What is Monophony?
One Sound/Single Melody
What is Homophony?
A single melody accompanied by supporting harmony
What is Polyphony?
Several Melodies of more or less equal focus at the same time
What is Drone?
A long or constant pitch played throughout all or part of a composition
What is Timbre? ("Tone Color")
The quality of an instruments sound that distinguishes an oboe from a flute or a voice or a trumpet
What is Instrumentation?
The Choice of instruments that play a certain piece
What is Orchestration?
The art of combining the instruments in different ways for musical effect
What is Heterogenous?
All different
What is Homogenous?
All similar
What is interval?
Moving from one pitch to another
What is Exocticism?
Adopting the sounds of other cultures for the sake of novelty
What is Ethnocentrism?
Humans judging music by its relationship to our cultural experience
What is Tuning system?
The methods by which frequencies will be represented on instruments and/or in a musical system
What is Tonal?
The feeling that a melody revolves around a pitch?
What is Atonal?
Avoiding a sense of tonality
What is Melody?
a series of pitches in rythmn
What is Contour?
A general direction or shape of a melody over time
What are cadences?
Momentary rest or arrival often found at pauses in the melody
What is Phrase?
The section of the melody from one cadence to another
What is Ornamentation?
Added notes or other small changes in pitch or loudness that don't change the overall character of the melody as much as embelish enhance it
What is motive?
a short melodic fragment that is repeated at certain parts
What is theme?
An entire melody recognizable as a discrete entity and may extend from the length of one phrase to a minute or more
What is strophic?
A song that repeats a group of melodic phrases over and over with different words
What is Rhythm?
How music is organized over time
What is beat?
A regular division of time
what is tempo?
The rate at which the beat passes
what is Accelerando?
Gradual speeding up of tempo
What is Ritardando/Rallentando?
Graduall slowing down of tempo
what is meter?
An organization of beats,division of beats, and grouping of beats into distinct levels of the passage of times
what is syncopation?
The metrical stress or account of a note is displaced in the meter so that the emphasis occurs on normally unstressed beats
what are ethnomusicologists?
Trained specialists who study music as a part of people's life
what are Musicologists?
Trained specialists who study the history of music
what are music theorists?
Trained specialists who analyze composition and musical systems
