Pectoralis Major
covers upper portion of chest, prime mover of arm flexion, medially rotates arm, pulls chest
upward
serratus anterior
located on lateral rib cage; moves scapula forward toward chest wall; rotates scapula
deltoid
triangular shoulder muscle, prime mover of arm abduction, can aid in flexion, extension, and
rotation of humerus
pectoralis minor
located beneath the pectoralis major, draws scapula forward and inferiorly
external intercostals
pulls ribs toward one another to elevate rib cage; aids in inspiration
internal intercostals
draws ribs together to depress rib cage; aids in forced expiration
diaphragm
forms floor of thoracic cavity; prime mover of inspiration; dome-shaped
rectus abdominis
flexes and rotates vertebral column; fixes and depresses ribs; stabilizes pelvis
duringwalking; used in sit ups and curls
external oblique
most superficial lateral muscle; aids in lateral flexion, used in oblique curls
internal oblique
same function as external oblique, only difference is that most fibers run at right angles
transversus abdominis
deepest muscle of abdominal wall; compresses abdominal contents
