Colophon
Inscription page found at the end of a yearbook that pertain to print specifications of the book
Copy
Text in book. Body copy, caption copy or headline copy. Every yearbook spead includes a copy block to tell a story, quotes, or surveys.
Cover
Thick cardboard that protects the pages. Which includes the representation of the theme or concept, name of book, name of school & year
Divider
A single page or double page spread used to separate each section of yearbook. Most staffs try reinforcing the theme on divider pages.
Endsheet
Heavy sheet of paper that attaches the book to cover. Theres an endsheet in both front and back of the book. It can be printed or left blank
Opening
The first few pages of the book, where the yearbook staff typically reinforces the theme introduced on the cover for the first time.
Section
Way to organize the yearbook for staff and audience. Sections include Student Life, Academics, Organizations, People, Sports & Ads.
Spin-Offs
Phrases and logos that come from the theme concept and are used for each section of the book.
Spread
2 facing pages in a publication. Spread should take what the eyes see on the 2 facing pages vs. single pages, printed side by side.
Theme
Verbal statement & a visual look that brings the yearbook together. The theme should exemplify student body, school and your year.
Alternative Coverage
Coverage that allows yearbook staffs to tell students stories in many ways. Surveys, Q , top ten, quizzes and charts
Coverage
Topics that will be featured on individual spreads as well as how the topics will be highlighted.
Four-Color Process
Process Color. Produces color pages on an offset press. Cyan (BLue) Magenta (Red) Yellow & Black. Mixing primary colors together.
Flat
One side of a signature; the eight pages that are printed on one side of a press sheet.
Index
A-Z listing, along with corresponding page #'s, of all students, teachers & administrators ft. in yearbook.
Ladder Diagram
Overall map that shows places of every placement of every layout in yearbook. The more complete ladder, the easier to complete the book.
Signature
Sometimes called sigs. 16 pages that are printed both sides of 1 press sheet of an offset press. (1-16, 17-32, 33-48, 49-64)
Smythe Sewn Binding
Binding method where 16 pages are printed on 1 sheet of paper, then folded and ultimately sewn together with other signatures to build book.
Spot Color
1 color that is printed on page, usually black & white page. Metallic inks also consider spot color because silver/gold cant be mixed (CYMK)
