War Crimes
Generic term to describe mass destruction or genocide (ex. nuclear holocaust, Turkish
genocide of Armenians in 1915, etc.)
Holocaust
The total genocide attempted against the Jews by the Nazis during WWII.
The Holocaust
Acts of persecution against a group or groups so heinous as to warrant punishment under
international law. The term was first used in 1907.
Crimes Against Humanity
Polish Jew, immigrated to US before WWII, coined term "genocide", initiated Genocide
Convention, adviser to US counsel at Nuremberg Trials.
Raphael Lemkin
The destruction in whole or part of a religious, ethnic, or national group.
Genocide
Destruction of a culture (ex. Nazis destroyed Polish culture).
Cultural Genocide
To clear a land of its people, whether through violence or not (ex. Slobodan Milosevic in
Bosnia).
Ethnic Cleansing
The act of killing people to get them to leave their land, as compared to killing people just to
get rid of them.
Partial Genocide
The act or attempted act of killing every last one of a religious, ethnic, or national group.
Total Genocide
Refers to dispersed Jewish populations that moved or scattered away from their homelands,
but all the while maintaining cultural ties.
Jewish Diaspora
Accusation that the Jews killed Jesus according to the Gospel of John.
Christ-Killer Accustion
Prejudice that is relatively truthful.
Realistic Prejudice
Prejudice that is somewhat distorted, but also has some truth to it.
Xenaphobic Prejudice
Prejudice that is not anchored to reality, and is completely untruthful; is often based on
fear or hate.
Chimeric Prejudice
Ideology that Christians have superseded the Jews as the “chosen ones”, as the Romans
destroyed the Jewish Empire.
Theology of Supersession
Major theorist of Medieval Anti-Semitism, died in 2005. Organized three levels of
prejudice: realistic, xenophobic, and chimeric.

Political separation between medieval & modern times. Had 2 aspects: kings/feudalism have
ended, & the Industrial Revolution is occurring.
Dual revolution
Persecution of Jews caused by feudalism/medieval times has ended. General equality has been
achieved.
Jewish Emancipation
Period of about 40 years where the European nations conquer parts of Africa & Asia; was
influenced by the Dual Revolution, & racist ideology
Imperialism
Racist twist of Darwins theory of survival of the fittest. Nationalities became races of
their own, Europeans at the top, was not scientific
Social Darwinism
French aristocrat & novelist. Wrote An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races; was heavy
promoter of Social Darwinism/racial superiority
Comte de Gobineau
The theory from where Hitler and the Nazis came from. Was a nationalistic movement, not
liberal like those of Britain, France, and the US.
Sonderweg Theory
The philosophical attempt to describe things in terms of their apparent purpose, directive
principle, or goal.
Teology
A mixture of great enthusiasm for modern technology with a rejection of the Enlightenment, &
the values & institutions of liberal democracy.

Mayor of Vienna under the Christian Social Party; exploited popular anti-Semitic views to
further his political ambitions/agenda.

platform; made anti-Semitism acceptable & mainstream

Phrase coined by Israeli sociologist, Schulamit Volkov; referred to how one's view on the

Israeli sociologist; believed that anti-Semitism functioned as a culture code in the late
19th Century; was a political/cultural perspective

Form of chemical warfare used in artillery shells; was a powerful irritant to eyes, nose,
lungs, etc. Was used as an area-denial weapon

Signed on June 28, 1919; ended WWI. Forced German military restrictions, territory losses,
war reparations, guilt clause. Resented by most.
The Treaty of Versailles
AKA the War Guilt Clause, was an article of the Treaty of Versailles; made Germany accept that
they caused the war & had to pay reparations

One strong leader; totalitarian; nationalistic ideology; militaristic in nature; one
political party; racist ideology; Mussolini in Italy
Fascism
The longer an internet argument or discussion is, the greater the odds of a comparison to
Hitler.

One man rules; nation has single party; military marches; forced mass public state support;
lack of freedom due to politics/state control

People’s Party; bigger than a political party, enticed Germanic people across social
classes to join; was nationalistic & anti-Semitic

A unified ethnic German community that promoted national solidarity across social classes.

Leadership Principle; leadership by one leader (the Fuhrer), with a hierarchy of
