Color Theory
Chapter One
19 cards·by Lissa
What is Value?
Value is the relative quality of lightness or darkness in a color. Value means luminosity. The
darker a color is, the less value it has
What is Overtone?
A term borrowed from music. It describes the secondary hue bias or leaning of a primary hue
What is Secondary Triad
The secondary triad consists of green, orange, and violet. Each of these colors can be mixed by
combining two primary colors
What is a Co-Primary?
Co-Primaries expand the primary triad of red, yellow, and blue into three pairs that include
warm and cool versions of each primary color
What are tones?
Tone is a somewhat generic term that can refer to any color except prismatic colors. All muted
colors and chromatic grays are tones.
What are Tertiary Colors?
These are also called intermediate colors and are yellow-orange, red-orange, blue-green,
yellow-green, blue-violet, and red-violet
What are Earth Tone Primaries?
a triad of earth tones such as burnt sienna, yellow ocher, and Paynes Gray
What is Saturation?
the relative purity of hue present in a color. three levels of saturation: prismatic color,
muted color, and chromatic gray
What are the Structural Factors of Color?
Saturation, hue, and value
What are complimentary hues?
any 2 hues that lie directly opposite each other on the color wheel. When mixed, the resulting
color is darker than the parent colors
What is a color wheel?
The color wheel is any circular depiction of the hue continuum and has been used for centuries
by color theorists
What is the Primary Triad?
The primary triad is indivisible and, in theory, all other colors can be mixed from it.
What is Hue?
the name given to a color to describe its location on the color spectrum, owing to its
particular wavelength
What is the Hue Continuum?
a graphic representation of the full color spectrum from infrared to ultraviolet
What is Spectrum?
a phenomenon of light that can be seen in a rainbow or prism reflection. It contains the full
range of hues present in sunlight
What are Spectral Colors?
Those colors that approach the purity of colors cast by a glass prism
What is Subtractive Color?
color as manifested by reflected, rather than direct, light. Subtracted color primaries
produce a dark dull tone when intermixed
What is Luminosity?
Light reflected from a surface. It is tied to value. The lighter a color is the more luminous it
is.
What is Additive Color?
Color seen as light. When they are combined the result is a white light
