Web Browser
Program that displays web pages and linked items.

Collection of web pages, typically contains a home page (also called an index page), default page displayed when you enter a site.

Process of going to a site
You type in a logical adress, this then goes to the DNS (domain name system), the DNS identifies the IP address and takes you to the site.
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
identifies internet resource's type and location, always logical, every site has a unique URL.
Four parts of URL
Protocol (http), domain name (identifies web server), path (specifies what the subdirectory is), resource name (file name)
History List
Compiles a list of the web pages visited, sometimes the back button does not work because there is confusion (Amazon, Ebay)

Allows web pages visited often to be marked
Downloading
Process of transferring a file or document from one computer to user's computer
Uploading
Process of transferring a file or document from user's computer to another computer
Really Simple Syndication (RSS)
connection to a website that allows users to receive constant updates (yahoo), aggregator program gets the new content they alert you
Aggregator Program
Regularly checks each site on your subscriptions list and sends alerts if new information has been published.
Wiki
simple web page where any visitor can post text or images, change posted information, and track earlier changes
Blog
internet equvalent of a journal or diary where posted opinions, thoughts, and interesting links are kept, any user can update
Podcasts
Audio, image, or video files realeased by web syndication, another way of doing RSS byt with videos (usually)
Podcatchers
automatically identify and retrive new files in a given series and make them available.
Subject Guide
web pages grouped under specific headings, one way protals organize information
Portal
web page that acts as a gateway to diverse sources and presents them in an organized way
Search engines
Index databases of web pages to enable fast information searches, more popular (google)
Spiders
programs that roam the web to add new web pages to search engine indexes, way search engines work.
Link Rot
results from hyperlinks that no longer work or web pages that have been removed or restructured.

Phrase Searching
