Skeletal System
divided into two groups, the axial and appendicular skeleton fro a total of 206 bones in the body
Axial Skeleton
consists of 80 bones that revolve around the vertical axis of the skeleton
What consists of the Axial Skeleton?
Skull, Facial Bones,Thoracic cage & vertebral column
Appendicular Skeleton
Consists of 126 bones that append to the axial skeleton
What consists of the Appendicular Skeleton?
Pectoral girdle, Upper Limb, Pelvic Girdle & Lower Limb
What are the functions of the Axial Skeleton?
Protects brain and internal organs, provides structure and support & attachment for muscles
What are the functions of the Appendicular Skeleton?
Protection, attachment for muscles, support and movement & blood cell formation
What are long bones?
those that are longer than they are wide
Examples of long bones are?
Humerus and femur
What are short bones?
are as wide as they are long
Examples of short bones are?
tarsals of foot and carpals of hand
What are flat bones?
broad flat plates used for protection and muscular attachment. Most RBC's are produced in flat bones
Examples of flat bones are?
rib cage and sternum
What are irregular bones?
have peculiar shape and cannot be grouped in the other bone categories
Example of irregular bones are?
coccyx and hyoid
Anterior
Towards the front
Posterior
towards the back
Superior
towards the head
Inferior
towards the feet
Proximal
nearest;closer to any point of reference
Distal
remote;farther from any point of reference
Lateral
point that is more distant from the median plane
Medial
point that is closer to the median plane
Three kinds of connective tissue are?
cartilage, ligaments, tendon
What is cartilage?
a flexible connective tissue found between the bones of joint. It acts as a cushion between joint and reduces friction in movement
What is a ligament?
dense, flexible tissue that connects bone to bone at a joint
What is a tendon?
consists of dense collagen fibers and connect muscle to bone
What is a joint?
point where two or more bones articulate allowing movement and mechanical support
What are the three types of joints?
Fibrous, Cartilaginous and synovial
