Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as.
Idiom
An expression whose meaning cannot be understood from the meanings of the individual words
composing it.
Personification
Giving human characteristics to inanimate objects.
Alliteration
Two words in the same line with the same starting sound.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares unlike things in order to suggest a similarity.
Poetry
Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression if fellings and ideas by
the use of distinctive style and rhythm.
Onomatopoeia
The formation or use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the
objects or actions they refer to.
Rhyme
Two or more words that match the same sound (Poetry) a verse or piece having corresponding
sounds at the ends of the lines.
Rhythm
The arrangement of words into a more or less regular sequence of stressed and unstressed or
long and short syllables.
Mood
The feeling of the reader through writing.
Diction
Choice and use of words in speech or writing.
Stanza
An arrangement of a certain number of lines, sometimes having a fixed length, meter, or rhyme,
forming a division of a poem.
Irony
The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning.
Line
A line is a unit of language into which a poem or play is divided.
