what are lipids?
fats, oils, waxes, not water-soluble, made of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen
what does saturated mean?
there are no carbon double bonds
what does unsaturated mean?
there is at least one carbon double bond
what does polyunsaturated mean?
there are multiple carbon double bonds
what are nucleic acids?
polymers, made of monomers called nucleotides, which store and transmit genetic information, and have a nitrogenous base
what is a nitrogenous base?
a nitrogen-containing molecule with the properties of a base
what is the meaning of genetic?
of or having to do with genes
what does RNA stand for?
ribonucleic acid
what does DNA stand for?
deoxyribonucleic acid
what is a protein?
a macromolecule which is used for the building/growth of muscle tissue
what is an amino acid?
a building block of protein
what is the meaning of transport?
the movement of materials/goods
what is a reaction?
a process in which one or more substances are changed into other substances
what is a reactant?
one of the substances involved in the initial stages of the reaction
what is a product?
a substance produced by a reaction
what does endergonic mean?
endergonic defines a reaction in which energy must be added for the reaction to occur
what does exergonic mean?
exergonic defines a reaction in which energy is released as opposed to added
what is metabolism?
the process of breaking down digested food within the stomach
what is activation energy?
activation energy is what is added to initiate a reaction (which can be exergonic OR endergonic)
what is a catalyst?
something that speeds up a reaction but IS NOT CONSUMED BY THE REACTION
what is an inhibitor?
something that slows down a reaction but IS NOT CONSUMED BY THE REACTION
what is an enzyme?
a catalyst specifically designed to catalyze one reaction over and over
what is a substrate?
a reactant catalyzed by enzymes
what is an active site?
where the substrate FITS!!!
what is pH?
percent Hydrogen, or a measure of the acidity of a substance
