Prokaryotes
no nucleus, bacteria and archaea cells,
Eukaryotes
nucleus, most are multicellular, larger than prokaryotic cells, Eukarya cells
Three Domains
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Bacteria Cell
plasma membrane, single chromosome, ribosomes (synthesize proteins), stiff cell wall
Prokaryotes Genetic Information
one supercoiled circular chromosome, plasmids (small supercoiled, circular DNA molecules)
Prokaryote Internal Structure
all contain ribosomes, internal photosynthetic membranes, membrane closed organelles, cytoskeleton
Bacteria Organelles
membrane bound internal compartments
Prokaryote External Structure
flagella, most have a cell wall (bacteria and archaea cell walls are a rough, fibrous layer that surrounds the plasma membrane)
Nucleus
large and highly organized, surrounded by a double bounded membrane nuclear envelope, information storage and processing
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER)
membrane bound tubes and sacs studded with ribosomes, interior is called the lumen, new proteins- folded and processed in lumen
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)
no ribosomes, synthesizes enzymes, phospholipids, fatty acids
Golgi Apparatus
series of stacked flat membranous sacs-cisternae, processes- sorts- ships proteins synthesized in RER, vesicles carry materials to and from
Ribosomes
non-membranous, subunits containing RNA molecules and proteins, attached to the RER or free in cytosol, protein synthesis
Peroxisomes
globular organelles bound by a single membrane, center of oxidation
Lysosomes
single membrane bound structures- 40 different digestive enzymes, in animal cells, digestion and waste processing
Vacuoles
large membrane bound structure, used for storage of water and/or ions
Mitochondria
Two membranes; inner- cistae, inside inner- mitochondria matrix, have own DNA, ATP production
Chloroplasts
plant and algal cells, photosynthesis, outside vesicles is the stroma, vesicles called thylakoids-grana
Cell Wall
Fungi (chitin), algae and plants (cellulose) have a stiff outer cell wall,
Endomembrane system
consists of the SER+RER+golgi apparatus, protein+lipid synthesis
Three types of cytoskeleton elements
Actin filaments, Intermediate filaments, microtubules
