Lead
The beginning of a news story, often consisting of just one sentence.
Question Leads
A lead that begins with a question, generally to be avoided.
Quote Lead
A lead that begins with an unattributed quote, usually to be avoided because it it unclear.
Summary Leads
A lead that provides the briefest possible summary of the major facts of a story in the first
sentence.
Descriptive Leads
A lead that attempts to create a picture in the reader's mind.
Action Leads
Set-up the action/conflict for the whole story in a few sentences
Dialogue Lead
A lead that begins with a conversation between two or more characters.
Inverted Pyramid
A style of news writing in which the main facts appear at the top of the article (the lead) and
less-significant facts follow until the end.
Five W's and the H
Who, what, when, where, why, and how. These elements belong in nearly every newspaper story.
Tease
To use a lead that coaxes readers into a story by encouraging them to read further to see what the
lead really means.
