General Principles of Tick Removal
Do not pull out w/fingers, use gloves, identify tick, avoid manipulation, avoid crushing or
partial tears, ETOH, nail polish and burning
Prevention for Contracting a Tick
Avoid mamal such as deer and rodents, wooded area, tight-fitting clothes, inspect clothing.
wear repellent citronella or DEET

Keep dsg clean & dry x 48 hrs, min. swelling and redness, S/Sx of infection, Cephalexin or
duricef, pain medications

Tetanus (if more than 5 yrs give booster), debris, soak warm saline, leave open apply abx,
watch for infection

Causes liquefaction of proteins and can penetrate anterior chamber, need longer period of

Assess redness, excessive tearing, dischage, swelling, bleeding, photophobia, visual
acuity, normal pH 7.4-7.6

Send to Ophthalmologist f/u 24-48 hrs
