Process
raised area or projection on bone
Fissure
slit like opening; usually transit of vessels and nerves
Foramen
any opening; usually transits vessels and nerves
Hyoid bone
located in the neck; shares the same developmental origin as the facial bones
Xiphoid Process
Lies at level of T10; midline pointer to surface of liver, diaphragm and inferior border of the
heart
Manubrium
superior part of the sternum
Floating ribs
Ribs 11-12; their cartilages don't connect with the sternum
False ribs
Ribs 8-10; connection with the sternum is either indirect or absent
True ribs
ribs 1-7; they attach directly to the sternum through their own costal cartilages
Coccyx
tailbone
Sacrum
4-6 separate vertebrae that fuse together by age 24
Dens
prominent odontoid process that articulates with the atlas
Axis
C2
Atlas
C1
Vertebral Foramen
houses the spinal cord
Spinous Process
portion of spine you can feel
Laminae
two broad, flat plates of bone
Pedicles
short processes that join the vertebral arch to the vertebral body
Spina Bifida
disease where the laminae fail to develop normally
Scoliosis
curvature of the spine
Lordosis
swayback
Kyphosis
hunchback
Vertebral Column
extends from the skull to the apex of the coccyx
Makeup of Vertebral Column
7 cervical, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar
Sella Turcica
Depression on the superior surface of the sphenoid bone; houses the pituitary gland
Occipital Condyles
large protuberances on the lateral aspects of the occipital bone
Sinus
acts as resonators for the voice and reduce the weight of the skull; help humidify and warm
inspired air to body temperature
Lacrimal bone
smallest bone at the anterior margin on the medial wall of the orbit
Infraorbital Foramen
small opening in front of orbital bone; transits for blood vessels and nerves
Vomer
long, thin bone that runs down the middle of the nasal cavity
Middle Nasal Concha
extends from the foramina in sphenoid bone to accommodate passage of the optic nerves
Mandibular Condyle
rounded portion of mandible located at top left peripheal; articulates with the skull
Mental Foramen
small opening on lower portion of mandible; transits nerves and blood vessels
Styloid Process
small pointy bone that extends from the base of the temporal bone
External Auditory Canal
canal that extends from the external ear to the eardrum
Mastoid Process
protuberance of the temporal bone just behind the ear
Coronoid Process
thin triangular portion of mandible on the upper right side (peripheal)
Mandible
lower jawbone
Maxillary Bone
portion of facial structure from above gum line to nasal area
Zygomatic Bone
cheekbone
Temporal Bone
portion of the skull that is on the side protecting temple area
Zygomatic Arch
straight bone that connects the zygomatic bone to the temporal bone
Occipital Bone
Bone that makes up back portion of skull
Parietal Bone
Left and right bones of skull
Frontal Bone
front bone of skull
Skull
Made up of 22 bones; 8 cranial & 14 facial
Anatomical Position
Standing erect; feet slightly apart; eyes forward; arms straight by side; palms facing
forward; fingers extended; feet flat; toes forward
Medial
toward the midsaggital plane (nose is medial to the ears)
Lateral
away from the midsaggital plane (arms are lateral to the chest)
Proximal
toward the trunk or point of attachment (elbow is proximal to shoulder)
Distal
away from the trunk or point of attachment (wrist is distal to shoulder)
Superficial
toward the surface of the body or any of its parts
Deep
toward the inside of the body or any of its parts
Medullary
an inner region
Cortical
an outer region
Ipsilateral
on the same side of the body (right arm and leg)
Contralateral
on the opposite side of the body (left side of the brain is contralateral to the right side)
Posterior
toward back of the body
Anterior
toward front of the body
Pelvic Cavity
contains the bladder, portions of large intestine and internal reproductive organs
Abdominal Cavity
contains the stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine and most of large
intestine
Thoracic Cavity
Chest; contains heart and lungs
Cranial Cavity
Formed by skull bones; contains the brain
Transverse (cross-sectional plane)
crosswise plane that divides any of its parts into upper and lower parts
Coronal (frontal)
plane that runs lengthwise from side to side; divides the body or any of its parts into anterior
& posterior sections
Parasagittal
sagittal plane that divides the body or any of its parts into unequal right and left sides
Midsagittal
plane that divides the body or any of its parts into symmetric and equal right and left sides
Sagittal
plane that runs lengthwise from front to back; divides body into left and right sides
Urinary System
kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra
Male Reproductive System
testes, epididymis, cas, deferens, seminal vesicles and prostate gland
Female Reproductive System
Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus and vagina
