Modem
a piece of hardware that links your computer to other computers through telephone lies or cable lines
Network
a group of computers connected together to share information through telephonel ines or cable lines
Software
a set of electronic instructions that tells a computer what to do
Server
a computer on the network of the Internet that provides informaion
Caps Lock Key
used to make all uppercare letters
Shift Key
press the shift key with another key to type an uppercare letter
Tab Key
use this key to move the cursor to the next stopping point
Backspace Key
removes characters to the LEFT
Delete Key
Removes characters to the RIGHT
Numeric Keypad
makes it easier to enter numbers into the computer
Return (Enter) Key
use this key to start a new paragraph or to tell the computer to carry out a command
CTRL and ATL Keys
use the CTRL Key or ATL Key with another key to make the computer do a specific task
Space Bar
Press to insert a blank space
Escape Keys
press the escape key to quit a task
Arrow Keys
use the arrow keys to move the cursor up, down, right, or left on the screen
Bit
an individual pieve of computerized information
Byte
the main unit of memory in a computer
Chip
an electronic circuit etched onto a small sliver of silicon, and mounted on a block of plastic
Data
the info that a computer processes
Database
a collection of data organized into various categories
File
a collection of bytes, representing a program or data, organized into records and stored as a named group on a disk
Input
a way to communicate with the computer that stores informaion
Memory
the circuitry in a computer that stores informaion
Output
a monitor or a printer that allows the operator to recieve info from the computer
Program
a series of instructions that make a computer perform a task
Random Access Memory (RAM)
temporary memory; accepts new informaion
Read Only Remory (ROM)
permanent memory. Its contents can only be read by the computer.
Web Server
computer on the Internet that provides information
Computer Network
linked group of computers
Intranet
internal network within one location, usually one office or building-aka-LAN
Internet
worldwide network of smaller computer networks linked by a unique ID addresses
