What are the components of an oporating system?
User Interfaces, File Allocation Tables, Boot File and The Kernel
What are the functions of an oporating system?
Error Reporting, Memory Management, Resource Management, I/O Management, Device
Management and Interrupt Management
What is the advantage of having memory managment?
The allocation of memory allows separate processes to run at the same time, It helps deal with
memory when using paging or segmentation.
What are the three Job States?
Running, Ready and Blocked
What are all the different types of oporating system?
Multitasking OS, Multi-access/Multi-user OS, Distributed OS, Real Time OS, Transaction
Processing, Process Control and Embedded
What do all oporating systems provide?
They control the hardware, They provide a UI for access, They provide utilities for
basictasks and they provide security and privacy.
What are the basic functions a OS can do?
File Hangling, Formatting, Defragmentation and Virus Protection
What does an OS sytem provide that helps with privacy?
they provide back up procedures and User logins and passwords
How is Multi-access/Multi-user OS Achieved?
By giving each terminal a time slice and rotating through each terminals request to the CPU
How does Multi-access/Multi-user OS avoid wasting time?
Flags prevent time slices from terminals with no task wasting the CPU's time
How does the OS differentiate between different users data and programs when using
Multi-access/Multi-user OS?
The CPU can differentiate between different users data and programs by storing them in
different areas of its main memory
How can file access be sped up when using Distributed OS?
The file access can be sped up using this system, as more than 1 file command is able to occur at
any one time
What is an example of a Real Time OS?
Nuclear power station
What are the two main methods for memory management?
paging and segmentation
What is a consequence of using segmentation?
It relies on linkers and loaders
What checks are included in POST?
Checking: memory, system clock/timer, processor, keyboard is present, screen display
memory, checking BIOS are all okay
What happens if the POST checks are completed?
the system will boot the OS using the bootloader to load the OS's kernel into memory.
What happens if the POST checks fail?
the BIOS will use beep codes to inform the user of the error
What is an advantage of using Virtual Machines?
An advantage of a virtual machine is that it can be backed up and duplicated
What are possible uses of using a Virtual Machine?
A virtual machine can be used to emulate another OS, this helps in testing. It is also possible
to virtualise a network.
How is an interrupt dedicated?
An interrupt is detected by checking the interrupt register at the end of each FDE cycle.
When does that task change as a result of an interrupt?
The system will compare the priority of the currently running task to the priority of the
interrupt, and decide whether to change task.
What are the three different levels of interupt?
Low, Medium, High Level Scheduling
What are the two main types of Scheduling?
Non Pre-Emptive and Pre-Emptive
What is scheduling suppose to do?
Its suppose to utilise the processor efficiently by ensuring as many jobs are processed in the
shortest amount of time.
