Abridgement
A shortened form of a word retaining the unity of the original

Bildungsroman
A novel about the moral and psychological growth of the main character.
Biography
History of a persons life told by someone else.
Canon
An authoritative list, as off the works of an author.
Direct characterization
The author states facts about a characters personality.
Complication
Situation or detail escalating tension in the plot.
Deus Ex Machina
An improbable character or event suddenly introduced to untangle a plot or resolve a situation.
Flashback
A scene that breaks the normal time sequence and represents what happened earlier.
Foil
A strong contrast or comparison between two characters.
Litotes
A figure of speach expressing an affirmation by the negation of its opposite.
Metonymy
A subject in the place being used as the name.
Motif
A recurrent thematic element in a literary work.
Novel
A long work of narrative prose fiction.
Novelette
A short novel.
Paradox
A contradictory statement that contains truth.
Satire
A literary work in which human vice or folly is riduculed or attacked scornfully.
Sobriquet
An affectionate or humerous nickname, an assumed name.
Synecdoche
A fihure of speech in which part is used for the whole.
Poetic justice
An outcome whereby one recieves one's punishment or reward in a manner peculiarly or ironically appropriate.
Epithet
A term used as a descriptive substitute for the name or title of the person.
