Emergency drugs include
- Epinephrine - Vasopressin - Sodium bicarb - Atropine - Dopamine - Dobutamine -
Norepinephrine - Phenylephrine
Epinephrine action
-constricts peripheral vessels - dilates coronary vessels - increases HR - increase BP -
increases force of contraction
Epinephrine uses
- vtach - Vfib - Asystole - PEA
Epinephrine s/e
- Shakiness - Anxiety - Sweating - Tachycardia
Epinephrine nursing considerations
- Monitor VS o EKG o Pulse ox o Palpable pulse - IV access - Oxygen - Give correct strength -
Continue ALCS with CPR o Shock if advised - No
Vasopressin
- ADH - Peripheral vasoconstrictor - Increases blood flow and O2 to heart and vital organs
Vasopressin Uses
- In place of 1st or 2nd epi dose in a code situation - Hemodynamic shock - Septic shock
Sodium Bicarbonate
- Acts as a buffer for profound metabolic acidosis - Controversial and AHA is against its
routine use for cardiac arrest
Atropine
- Increase SA node firing - Increases speed of conduction through AV node - Thereby increases
HR - Use for SYMPTOMATIC bradycardia
Atropine s/e
- Cholinergic side effects//dries everything out - Dry mouth - Dilated pupils - Blurry vision
- Tachycardia - Sedation - Constipation - Diff
Atropine nsg considerations
- Cardiac monitor - Oxygen - IV access - Assess LOC - Give 0.5 mg every 3-5 min for a max of 3 mg - Be
prepared to initiate transcutaneous p
Drugs that can be given by inhalation (down ET Tube)
“NAVEL” - Narcan - Atropine - Vasopressin - Epinephrine - Lidocaine
What are the vasopressors
- Norepinephrine - Epinephrine - (Vasopressin) ((PPT has this listed separately as an
ADH/non-adrenergic periph vasoconstrictor)) - Phenylep
General action of vasopressors
- Constrict peripheral vessels to send blood back to heart/core/vital organs - Will increase
HR - Will increase BP - Will increase contracti
Vasopressors reversal agent
Phentolamine
DOPamine
~think KIDS (kidneys) of DOPe (dopamine) - Periph vasoconstriction - DILATES blood vessels
in o Brain o Heart o Kidneys
