Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
Atom
The basic unit of Matter. An ____ cannot be broken down by a chemical change.
Proton
A positively charged particle found in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
A particle with no charge but the mass of a proton.
Electron
A negatively charged particle found outside the nucleus in a region called the electron
cloud.
Nucleus
The center of an atom containing the protons and neutrons.
Electron Cloud
The Region surrounding the nucleus of an atom where electrons are found.
atomic mass/weight
The number of protons and neutrons found in the nucleus of an atom.
atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus.
element
A type of matter with only one type of atom. Each element has it's own kind of atom where the
number of protons defines the element.
AMU
The unit of measure used to measure the mass of an atom.
Isotope
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons, but different number of neutrons.
Radioactive Element
An atom of an element that undergoes nuclear changes in which particles break apart and energy
leave the nucleus of the atom.
Valence
The outermost energy level or shell in an atom.
Quark
Subatomic particles found within the protons and neutrons of an atom.
Ion
A positively or negatively charged atom having the number of protons not equal to the number
ofelectrons.
