Of the Moon and the Earth
28 cards·by sgbrown
What are the three variables in an experiment
Dependent, Independent, and Control
What is Dependent Variable
Dependent is what you're measuring, depth of crater or width of the crater
What is Independent Variable
What you're changing, height or speed of marble
What is the Control Variable
something that you are trying to keep the same, flour, force that we were dropping the marbles
Why do we experience day and night
Cause of Earth rotating on its axis, 1/2 in light and 1/2 in dark, and the continuous cycle that
takes 24 hours
Rotation
Earth spinning on it's axis counter-clockwise
Revolution
The Earth going around or orbiting the Sun
What causes the four seasons
Revolution, tilt of the axis, solar angle
What factors affect how hot or cold it is in any one place on Earth?
The distance from the equator or latitude, tilted toward or away from the sun, solar angle
What is the difference between a solstice and a equinox?
Equinox is the equal day and equal night, solstice is either the shortest or the longest day of
the year
How much of the moon always receives light from the sun?
½ is in light and ½ is in dark because it is a sphere in our solar system
What causes the phases of the Moon?
Looking from the point of view of Earth, moon’s rotation around the Earth
Describe the Moon’s period of rotation and revolution.
Both rotation and revolution of the Moon are 29.5 days
How long does it take the Moon to go through a cycle of phases?
27.3 or a lunar month
How are impact craters on the Moon formed? What are two main variables that affect crater size?
Asteroids or comets or meteoroids. Mass and speed can affect crater size.
Why are the craters on the Earth’s surface less evident than those on the Moon and other
terrestrial planets?
Tectonic plates, atmosphere burns them up, most of the Earth’s surface is water, erosion and
weathering, other landforms covering them
How does the lunar eclipse occur
when the moon goes into the earth's shadow
how does the solar eclipse occur
when the moon's shadow falls on the Earth or part of the Moon
Why don’t we have eclipses every month?
The moons orbit in on an angle (5 degrees)
List the planets in order according to their distance from the sun.
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
Which planet receives the most concentrated light from the Sun? Is it the hottest planet?
Explain.
Mercury it is not the hottest planet because it doesn’t have an atmosphere
What are the moon phases in order?
New Moon, Waxing crescent, 1st quater, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, 3rd
quarter, waning cresecent
What is the hottest planet
Venus because of its thick atomosphere
Why is it difficult to create an accurately scaled model of the solar system in the classroom?
Because they are so spread apart
Other than the eight planets, what other objects are in the solar system?
Moons, the Sun, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, meteoroids, dust, gases, man made
materials
What is a galaxy? What is the name of our galaxy?
A massive group of billions of stars, gases and dust held together by gravity
AU (Astronomical unit): 1 AU=
the distance from the sun to earth. It is comparable to 150,000,000
The Earth line up for seasons
Vernal Equnox to Summer solstice to Autumnal Equinox to Winter Solstice
